Would you buy a used car from a Washington D.C. politician today? Many background check companies are also pretty smooth operators….and will probably lead you on, and even leave you on the hook for charges which you never intended.
Now, I’m not saying that I’m the be-all and that you should absolutely listen to what I have to say about background checks. For gosh sakes, you know there are hundreds of “experts” out there tooting on their own horns and clamoring for your attention.
What I have to say is simply this: When it comes down to brass tacks, you can’t trust anyone’s recommendation about this sort of thing. I’ll present what I know, and you draw your own conclusions from there.
Thousands of people run a background check every day, but here’s the other thing: Most consumer background checks are often a waste of time, but many folks do them anyway out of curiosity…and there is a lot of curiosity out there. In fact here are some of the people who have asked about online background checks, and it includes everyone from a to z:
- moms who are worried about their child’s safety
- people who are just curious about their own public record and/or background check
- someone has been lied to and wants answers
- someone wants to check an ssn for verification
- someone who wants a babysitter/nanny background check
- landlords taking on new tenants
- private investigators
- skip tracers
- lawyers
- employers
- and the list goes on and on.
When I was first introduced to the concept of a background check, you may have experienced the same, I was enamored with the idea that private information could be dug up on someone else online. Plus, every single company was promising a whole lot of information that seemed too good to be true…Sound familiar?
Basically, I could go on and on, but the long and short is that while there were definitely a couple of companies that offered better results than the others, the glorious concept of digging up all your skeletons was dashed, just like my dreams of marrying my first love; and we all know what inevitably happens there.
So, whatever the reason is that you’re doing a background check, be it for personal, employment, nanny, contractor, or whatever reasons, the best I can offer is a maybe. Maybe you’ll find everything on this or that person, and maybe you won’t. Guarantees are pretty much just a nice thought and the only way you’ll get any kind of guaranteed results will probably be from a $500/hour detective.
Hope I haven’t completely ruined your day so far. So, enough with the patronizing; I won’t bother telling you there are three or four background checks that work. There are only two that I consider being somewhat worth your time and they are USSearch and eFindOutTheTruth. While they do work and are two of the best consumer background checks, don’t forget the facts.
All the best,
Dave Jordan
