Facebook Isn’t All Bad…How I Met My Fiance

I’ve written a lot about online dating, safety tips, do’s and don’ts, etc. and I thought I’d share my own personal experience with you…especially since it involves meeting someone through Facebook.

Online dating and meeting someone on Facebook.

I met my fiancee’ through Facebook, something I never thought would happen.   Being 40-something, divorced and male, I get friend requests seemingly every week from Russian mail order brides with names containing no vowels.  Of course I ignore and then block them, and I’m very careful with my Facebook page since I know my ex-wife stalks it and is looking for any kind of gossip.  With this in mind, you can imagine my surprise when a complete stranger messaged me on Facebook asking to meet.

The message read:  “Mark, You were on the list of invites to Sherry’s Winery event….and I noticed you. You look like a contented person who loves life, kids and the outdoors.   You can contact me on facebook if you like. It would be cool to meet you sometime”

I let this message stay in my inbox for two weeks before I replied.  Why?  Because I was so ready to dismiss it as yet another bogus invitation…yet I couldn’t delete the message because it was so completely honest and when I looked at her Facebook page, I discovered that she’s a real person and we had some mutual friends.   I finally contacted her and invited her to one of my acoustic shows (I’m a singer and guitar player by night) where we met and talked for a while.  Then after more public dates we fell in love.

Obviously that’s the encapsulated version, but that’s how it happened and with proper discretion and care about your own safety you really can meet the love of your life online.   The key is just don’t be in a rush.  Take your time, analyze your potential date’s Facebook page or dating profile, have your first few dates in public and then you’ll have the information you need to make your judgement on where to go from there:)
